Learning about Asian Art has continued with looking at Chinese Scroll paintings. As we watched a video about Chinese Scroll paintings we learned that viewing scroll paintings was a personal experience. They were highly valued, wrapped in silk and were a mark of prestige. Each scroll contained calligraphy that indicated the artist and details about the painting. Seals of each owner were placed on the scroll.

We created our scrolls by painting the backgrounds with red or blue to indicate whether it was night time or day time. On the scroll we left a white circle to symbolise the moon or sun. Then we blew black ink on the page in the shape of a tree. We added calligraphy & painted a red seal in the corner. They were a lot of fun to paint too! Especially blowing the ink!

What did you find interesting about Chinese Scrolls? What would you change about your painting?

  1. I loved Katherine’s painting. Although I did make the mistake of asking why the red man with the walking stick was up the tree.
    Whoops.
